2020 The Spirit of Kavala

The Spirit of Kavala – 14 May 2020

A few months have passed since the fruitful 5th Greek-Turkish Young Leaders Symposium (GTYLS) held in Kavala, Greece on 4-7 December 2019. The meeting took place at a time of tensions between Greece and Turkey countries which have taken a downturn in 2020 with tensions along both land and sea borders between the two countries. Both countries have also been hit by the novel Coronavirus which has put all of our lives or rather our way of life on hold with both its existentialist as well as its economic and social repercussions.

In other words, the state of our times provides the perfect opportunity for all involved in the Kavala meeting to reunite, at least virtually, to reintroduce themselves to each other and to continue in a structured manner the conversation and to maintain the Spirit of Kavala to which all involved contributed to.

The CIES and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation have, thus, formulated a structured dialogue which was held in as a webinar via Zoom on Thursday, 19 May. It entailed 4 sessions:

  • An update of the Corona situation from both countries and the respective responses from the government and political class
  • How does the public/media in Turkey view and report about the related situation in Greece and vice versa?
  • How does the pandemic affect bilateral relations?
  • How do we as a group move on? How can we shape projects to address the COVID19 reality and our cooperation in a post-COVID19 era?
